Laser-cutting Air Supply: Beyond Stable Pressure

Check inlet pressure, peak flow and air quality together to reduce supply fluctuations.

· BOSAN

For laser cutting with compressed air, supply quality involves more than a pressure-gauge reading. Dynamic pressure at the machine inlet, continuous air delivery and control of moisture, oil and particles must match the equipment requirements. Treating compression, storage, drying and filtration as one system is more important than choosing a high-pressure compressor in isolation.

Begin with the Cutting-machine Requirements

Confirm the gas requirements for the material, thickness, nozzle and process; compressed air is not suitable for every cutting task. For applications that use air, obtain the inlet-pressure, maximum-flow and air-quality requirements from the machine supplier. Where machines share a supply, assess simultaneous demand rather than sizing the entire line from one machine’s average consumption.

Check Pressure Fluctuations at the Point of Use

Normal compressor outlet pressure does not guarantee sufficient pressure at the cutting-machine inlet. Long or undersized pipes, valves and filters can create losses that become more apparent at high demand. Observe both the station and machine inlet during cutting starts and continuous operation. Storage can buffer fluctuations, but it cannot replace adequate continuous delivery or eliminate excessive piping resistance.

Check Drying, Filtration and Drainage Together

Select drying and filtration to meet the cutting-machine specification, checking pressure rating, flow capacity and operating conditions. Filters do not replace dryers, and a receiver alone cannot ensure dry air. Include condensate drains, filter differential pressure and dryer operation in routine inspections to prevent a failed drain from allowing moisture downstream.

Allow for Service and Future Expansion

Provide access for filter replacement, drain inspection and compressor service rather than placing an integrated unit tightly against a wall or heat source. Adding cutting machines requires reassessment of compression, treatment and header capacity, not just a larger receiver. Include electrical supply, installation location and shift patterns in the selection brief to reduce connection and capacity mismatches.

Support Cutting with a Complete Air-supply System

Define the process first, then check pressure, flow and air quality. BOSAN can help match compression and treatment equipment to the cutting-machine inlet requirements and site conditions.
